How to renew a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) number?
The LEI number renewal process is simple:
- Please enter your LEI number or company name to the application form.
- The form will be completed automatically with the current data from the GLEIF database. You can modify the data if it has changed during the year.
- Submit the LEI renewal application form.
- We will take care of the renewal.
When and why do I have to renew an LEI number?
Legal Entity Identifier needs to be renewed annually. This means that an LEI issued on 01.02.2020 will have to be renewed before 01.02.2021. We can add up to 60 days to the validity period (e.g. if the LEI expires on 01.02.2021, but the renewal is completed on 07.01.2021, the LEI will be valid until 01.02.2022).
If the renewal deadline has passed, your LEI will become inactive until renewed again.
The renewal process is necessary to ensure the data in the Global LEI Pool is relevant and up to date.
What is the difference between an LEI transfer and an LEI renewal?
An LEI renewal is an annual update of the registration data related to a Legal Entity in the GLEIF database. The data related to the entity has to be updated at least once a year.
An LEI transfer is the movement of an LEI code from one service provider to another. An LEI is transferable to provide clients a choice between service providers. If a client is not happy with the fees, service or data quality of their LEI provider they can move their LEI to another LEI issuer (LOU). In the process of transfer the LEI number does not change. It is a back-end process which is not visible to end customers. All LEI codes are valid in every jurisdiction. Investment service providers cannot differentiate between the LEI numbers based on the managing LOU.
Renewal service for multiple years
We know that renewing an LEI every year can be a time consuming process.
LEI Register offers the automatic renewal of an LEI number for a 1-, 3- or 5-year period. Whatever the period, you will receive a notification from us a month before your paid expiration date ends so you can again renew your LEI in time.

My LEI has lapsed - can I renew it or do I have to apply for a new LEI?
You cannot apply for a new LEI, the lapsed LEI has to be renewed. Once an LEI number has been assigned to a Legal Entity it cannot be changed. An LEI is a unique identifier and each company can have only one LEI number.
Where can I check the next renewal date of my LEI number ?
I do not need the LEI number any more. What do I have to do?
We always recommend keeping your Legal Entity Identifier active. However if you are sure that you do not need the number any more, just do not pay the renewal fee and the LEI will become inactive. No more action is required on your behalf.
If my LEI has lapsed do I have to pay the fee for a new LEI or for renewal?
